Overview of the Department
School of Business and Management, is a premier wing of Christ (Deemed to be University), since 1991 with a clearly defined approach for creating quality managers and entrepreneurs required to face the challenges of the corporate sector. The department offers undergraduate courses in Business and Administration and Masters Programme in Management and Finance which are challenging and specifically designed to develop and enhance career opportunities and to contribute in the dissemination of academic and applied knowledge in business management.
About the Department
Service Learning is a relatively new concept in Indian Higher Education in terms of pedagogy. Service learning is not the same as charity or volunteering. It is a learning tool that provides tangible service to the community. As experiential learning, this model encourages critical thinking as well as practical encounters with issues of the community. However, the community cannot be treated as a space of experimentation. Therefore, this demands a process of supervised “Planning”, “Execution”, “Assessment” and “Reflection” which are the core elements of Service Learning.
At the School of Business and Management (SBM), Social Concern Project (SCP) is offered as a one credit (15 hours) Core course in the fifth trimester of the MBA programme. Each faculty member is formally assigned 10-15 student mentees for the duration of the first to fifth trimester. This faculty mentor also supervises the SCP of their mentees.
This course attempts to utilize the academic capability and skill of the students of MBA programme to develop and suggest practicable solutions to enduring societal problems prevalent in India.
The course gives participants a service leadership perspective and facilitates understanding of the concept of serving the society by leveraging their management skills by applying them to assist in the issues faced by MSMEs/NGOs.
The Social Responsibility Project (SRP) is offered as a one credit course in the second semester of BBA programme at SBM.
This course intends to sensitize the students towards social issues faced by the society and to enable students to understand the role played by the Non-Governmental Organisation (NGOs) in addressing these social issues.
Students should identify an NGO and work for a minimum of 25 hours during the semester on any socially relevant projects of NGOs.
Both the SCP and SRP are implementations of Service Learning at SBM.
