Overview on the Department

The department promotes an intellectual climate of critical and creative ideation by inculcating among its students the habit of a critical reading of the word and the world alike. It has geared its academic engagements towards moulding students into responsible and socially sensitive citizens through programs that are designed to facilitate holistic development.

The academic programs offered by the department are aligned with the University’s vision and mission. With programs offered at the undergraduate, postgraduate, and research levels, the core areas of inquiry range from domain in language and literature, to those in and around culture.

Programs currently offered include BA English (Hons); BA (Liberal Arts); MA (English and Cultural Studies), and PhD (Cultural Studies).

About the Department

The Department of English and Cultural Studies strives to promote an atmosphere conducive to creative ideation and an appreciation for the word and the world. The Department is vividly coloured with lively debates, intelligent discussion and necessary research.

The following are the highlights of what the Department offers:

MA ECS: Practice Teaching and A Full-Project based Semester 

UG courses: Reading and Writing courses that are practice based and skill oriented and a three part Literary Studies, Cultural Studies and Language Studies Elective choice for English Honours.

Programme Eligibility

Eligibility for the programme is a pass at the +2 level (Karnataka PUC/ISC/CBSE/ NIOS/State Boards) in any stream (Humanities, Social Sciences, Commerce & Management, Sciences) from any recognised Board in India. Candidates writing the +2 examinations in March-May 2022 may apply with their class X and XI marks.

Students pursuing International curriculum must note that eligibility is according to AIU stipulations.

Applicants pursuing IB curriculum must have 3 HL and 3 SL with 24 credits.

Applicants pursuing GCE / Edexcel must have a minimum of 3 A levels, with a grade not less than C.


BA Liberal Arts [BGR]

Programme Eligibility

CHRIST follows University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M.Phil./Ph.D Degrees) Regulations, 2016 and the subsequent Amendments.

The minimum eligibility of candidates intending to pursue a doctoral programme is a pass with a minimum of 55% in the postgraduate programme in the discipline/specialization. Students who have completed their post-graduation from an international university must submit an equivalency certificate from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).

Every candidate has to take the PhD Entrance Examination and Interview to be held on June 15, 2022, or on June 22, 2022, or on any other date announced. However, as per the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M.Phil./Ph.D. Degrees) Regulations, 2016 (#5.1), those who qualify UGC- NET (including JRF)/UGC-CSIR NET (including JRF)/ SLET/GATE/ teacher fellowship holder or have passed M.Phil Programme shall be exempted from the PhD Entrance Examination. Those candidates take a Research Skill Assessment Test along with their Personal Interview.

Candidates who have qualified UGC-NET (including JRF)/UGC-CSIR NET (including JRF)/ SLET/GATE/ teacher fellowship holder (KSET, SET etc.) or have passed M.Phil Programme may apply for PhD any time of the year by sending their Research Proposal and CV to phd@christuniversity.in

Is BA English Honours at CHRIST (Deemed to be University) a triple-major programme?

No, The BA Honours in English Studies with non-core subjects History and Psychology at CHRIST (Deemed to be University) is a three-year rigorous programme, offering a splendid platform for varied literary, cultural and professional explorations. The students study two courses of history in their first year, and two courses of psychology in their second year. 

Does BA English Honours offer internship opportunities?

It does not offer internship opportunities, but students must undertake two internships during the course of the programme. 

Does BA English Honours offer literature only?

No, the curriculum exhibits an impressive variety, comprising courses on Literature, Culture, Gender, Ecology, Cinema, Linguistics, History, Writing, Indian Epics, Narratology, etc.

How is BA English Honours different from BA Communication and Media, English and Psychology?

BA Communication and Media, English and Psychology is a triple major programme, while BA English Honours is an honours programme with history and psychology as non-core subjects. English Studies, however, is still the key focus.

What are the unique features of BA English Honours offered by CHRIST (Deemed to be University)?

What is a Liberal Arts program and why should one opt for it?

A Liberal Arts program is one that gives students the option to study subjects from a vast academic spectrum, with the option to pursue unconventional combinations of subjects. It intends to establish intellectual freedom by providing all students with foundational knowledge in major fields of study, regardless of the major(s) and minor(s) that they choose to take up. Students pursuing a Liberal Arts program are exposed to a range of courses that span diverse fields such as history, critical thinking, media studies and creative writing.

What is the basic course structure for the Liberal Arts course?

Semesters I and II will have 3 Foundational Courses each (5 credits) and 1 Skill enhancement Course which will be compulsory for all BA (Liberal Arts) students. Additionally, they will have an interdisciplinary elective, which they can select from a pool of 14 courses on offer from the 7 clusters mentioned above. These IE classes will also have students from all the first-year classes of the different undergraduate programs on offer at the BGR campus. From Semester III onwards the students can select their own majors (in consultation with their Faculty Mentors) from the pool of subjects on offer from 7 different clusters - especially designed keeping the SDGs in mind – which over the course of 4 semesters will also align with one another.

What are the extra curricular and co-curricular activities offered in this course?

Currently, due to the ongoing pandemic extracurricular activities have been limited to the following: University Choir, Christ Music Bands, Model United Nations, Theatre, Drama and NCC. On a regular basis, many more extracurriculars are offered including a diverse range of sports, opportunities in event organising and management, different cultural activities and being involved in literary clubs and debate societies.

What is special about the BA Liberal Arts programme at Christ University?

This course is designed keeping the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations in mind - Building on the principle of ‘leaving no one behind’, emphasizes a holistic approach to achieving sustainable development for all. The Liberal Arts Degree is designed in a way that at the end of 3 years, the student can tailor their own specialization according to their own unique interests, from among multiple clusters such as Literary and Cultural Studies, Media Studies, Historical Studies and Material Culture, Psychology, International Relations and Political Science, Economics and Business Studies, Marketing and Tourism.

What are the additional initiativities exclusively in CHRIST to enrich student academics improvement?

In house CDI (Center for digital innovation) and IOC (Industry Oriented Cell) can make sure the industry standards projects and associations where students will be the part during their academic period.

Do the courses under the English department focus only on literature or on creative skills as well? 

While the syllabus for the literature papers, Additonal English and General English focuses mainly on literature and language, it also enables the students to think and write creatively through the discussions, the assignments and the projects.

Yes, Jabberwocky is the annual cultural festival of the English Deaprtment organised by the Literati. There are a variety of literary and cultural competitions and events that are held on the day.

Why should I take the Liberal Arts programme instead of a Triple Honors programme?

The Liberal Arts course includes a set of mandatory foundation courses in the first year which help establish a strong base in different disciplines. These foundation courses will also help the students make a more informed decision while choosing their major(s) and minor(s).

Is MA English and Cultural Studies a triple major programme?

This programme is a full time 2 years / 4 semesters offered at CHRIST (Deemed to be University) Bannerghatta road campus. The classes for this programme will be conducted at CHRIST (Deemed to be University), Bannerghatta Road (BGR) campus.

What are the few subjects that the current batch is doing?

The different subjects include Anthropology, Queer Ecology, PostHumanism Studies, Postcolonialism, Spatial Studies, Gender and Intersectionality

Is a Dissertation/Thesis compulsory?

The English and Cultural Studies expects students to choose a specialization between the two themes available and in their final semester a public display project/International Conference/Research Paper is mandatory and the students must get this published in a reputed Academic Journal to receive their degrees. The students will be offered themes to choose from and tehre will be Peer-Reviewing more often with a total of 26 hours of Independent Research and 4 hours of coursework.
