Overview on the Department

The Department of Media Studies at Christ University offers a plethora of opportunities to the student community to deepen their disciplinary knowledge, hone academic and professional skills and nurture an attitude of professional and societal service, along with excellence. A dynamic curriculum, innovative pedagogy, learner-centric values, intensive research, and relevant industry exposure in the form of internships and projects are defining features of the Department. The Department provides consultancy services to a variety of stakeholders and conducts outreach programmes for the community, fulfilling the University’s motto of excellence & service.

Admission FAQs

Are there any practical media subjects taught in the two years?

Emphasis will be placed on practical components so as to facilitate students in acquiring technical finesse in video production, advertising, corporate communications, print and broadcast journalism, photography, web designing, public relations etc. The course also intends to help students acquire an all round perspective and clarity of understanding in the discriminative and effective use and design of audio – visual, film and journalistic media for communication for several purposes like Advertising, Education, Development etc.

What are the kinds of assessments that the students will be required to undertake?

The Department has a mix of regular three hour exams, portfolio-based submissions, viva-voces, internship-based evaluations, practical demonstrations, etc, allowing diverse evaluation methods and multiple modes of students demonstrating their learning.

Are there any specialisation courses included?

The programme has two specialisations - one in Multimedia Journalism and the other in Advertising and Corporate Communications. In the first year, the students get a generic orientation in the domain of Media and Communication Studies. In the second year, they move into their specialisations.

What is the main focus of this program?

The course aims at exposing the students to the various means of communication and their origins and applications. The department with a near-industry environment will enable students to learn and practice in a professional setting aided by a band of enterprising teachers. The course aims at imparting professional and hands-on media exposure to students thereby making them a paragon of media talents and flair.

Should students from other than media backgrounds opt for this course?

Students who are from other than media backgrounds can benefit from this course as it aims at endowing students with a rich hybrid of talents in disciplines related to mass media and new media. This course also helps them to challenge themselves artistically through the media and communications related applications.

Would the students be required to buy equipment like cameras?

There is no compulsion to buy equipment. The students can work in the Media Lab and use the resources in order to gain equipment knowledge. All those admitted to the programme will have to purchase a laptop at their own cost.

Are there any mandatory internships?

Yes, three mandatory internships.

What will I be able to do after completing BA EMP course?

The students will be able to choose a subject of their choice and study further on the same and will also be eligible to sit for placements provided by the campus.

Is emphasis placed on social service?

Developmental Journalism is one of the key courses, readily lending itself for a Service Learning opportunity.

In MA MCS, which courses are inclined towards the professional domains?

Contemporary India, Cyber Culture, Critical Thinking, Research Methodology, Dissertation, Fictional Narratives, Non-Fictional Narratives, Digital Storytelling, Digital Advertising, Multimedia Reporting and Editing, Interpretative Journalism, Global Communication Immersive Journalism, Advertising Platforms, Imagineering, Public Relations and Corporate Communications, Elements of Writing, Entrepreneurship, Graphic Design, etc. are some of the courses that propel the students' prospects in both the higher education and professional domains.

In a triple major course, would media be the primary focus?

"The focus will be equally divided among all the papers. All papers provide credits which may vary from semester to semester."

Are there any practical media subjects taught in the three years?

In all the semesters, practical subjects are included so as to introduce the students to the practical field of media. For CEP, practical subjects include strategic storytelling, software for media, photography, broadcast and advertising. For JPE, essentials of writing, reporting and editing, broadcast journalism, photo and documentary journalism are some of the practical media subjects.

What is the difference between CEP and JPEng?

JPE focuses on the aspects related to journalism such as the essentials of writing, reporting, editing, broadcast journalism, photo and documentary journalism, film appreciation, new media journalism and environmental and development journalism. CEP focuses on aspects related to communication and media such as critical thinking, strategic storytelling, print media, software for media, photography, social media, broadcast, films, advertising, public relations, corporate communications and mass communications and rights.

Apart from classroom education, are there any other knowledge sharing sessions?

Yes, the media department conducts C Hive sessions for first and third year students. The students get an opportunity to interact with the industry experts and CHRIST’s journalism community. The events like Media Meet are conducted by the Media Department every year and invite students to engage in media-related knowledge sharing in sessions and talks held by some of the most renowned media personalities.

Would the courses involve research?

Yes, for CEP and JPE, in the sixth semester, Media Research is introduced as a core course. Students would pick up research skills and go on to do a working paper on any of the key media issues.

How many core papers are there in journalism?

There will be eight core papers in journalism, covering a broad spectrum of areas of journalism and mass communication.

Are there any skill enhancement courses in CEP?

‘Critical thinking’, a skill enhancement course in the first semester, is aimed at introducing the students to different aspects of critical thinking, its methods and processes and goes on to provide a platform for practice. The skill enhancement course for the second semester ‘Strategic Storytelling’ hopes to enable the students to move beyond automated execution of media roles and responsibilities and creatively make an effective difference. The skill enhancement course for third semester – ‘Software for Media’ - will teach them the varied audio, video software and production techniques. ‘Reading Cinema’ is a skill enhancement course where the domain of cinema as an important media of communication would be analysed. Research skills are focused on in the final year.

What does BA in EMP stand for?

The programme stands for Bachelors in Economics, Media Studies and Political Science, it is a triple major course that deals with understanding each of the subjects and finding a source of relevance among the subjects for a better understanding.

What is the scope of BA  EMP programme?

All the three subjects are taught in a way that makes it highly relevant to the current issues dealing with the society. With its high relatedness to each other, the subjects give students the scope to think and analyse from different perspectives.

What is a Triple Major programme?

A triple major programme allows you to specialize in three different subjects that are usually interrelated to each other. Here at Christ (Deemed To be University) the student gets to choose one particular subject for their research by the end of their fourth semester (electives being separate subjects). Till then all the students have common subjects and study the same subjects as per the course plan set by the respective clusters.

Are all the subjects given equal importance in EMP?

Yes, all the subjects are given equal importance and the credits are equally distributed, the students however are required to choose a subject to specialise in for their research in the final year of their course.

Why Economics, Media Studies and Political Science?

Although each of these subjects have different aspects of understanding they are closely related and have a really high potential to influence each other. This helps deepen the knowledge about these subjects and allows the students to understand the dynamics of these subjects and the influence that they have on each other.

How is BA EMP programme structured?

The programme is designed in a way to increase the intellectual capacity of a student with various assessments that deal with developments over the years it gives the student a better understanding of the subjects. The marking structure of the course will be the same as other courses.

What will I be able to do after completing BA EMP programme?

The students will be able to choose a subject of their choice and study further on the same and will also be eligible to sit for placements provided by the campus.

What if I am more interested in one particular subject in EMP?

In the final and third year of the programme students get to select a subject they would like to research about and will be assisted by professors for the same, which will help with further admissions as well. Since these subjects are inter-related students will have a better knowledge on using these subjects together.

What kind of jobs to expect after completing BA Jounalism (Hons) programme?

Graduates go on to become magazine journalists, researchers, sub-editors, feature writers, multimedia reporters, editorial assistants, copywriters, TV journalists, data journalists, advertising professionals, digital media professionals, photojournalists, multimedia journalists, news editors, columnists, public relations officers, etc.

Do students get internship opportunities?

Yes, students have to complete two mandatory internships during the programme. Our students have interned at organizations such as The Hindu, The Times of India, NDTV, The Indian Express, The Statesman, etc.

What does the ‘honours’ mean in Journalism (Honours)?

An ‘Honours’ in the title of the degree translates into an increased number of hours and credits for the core papers related to the field of study, in our case it being media related courses. This provides for sufficient time for hands-on training through practical sessions and an opportunity to develop in-depth understanding of essential theoretical concepts.

What is the difference between a Journalism (Hons) and a triple major with a media subject such as JPEng, CEP or EMP?

The Journalism (Honours) programme at CHRIST - BGR is marked by two mandatory internships at the end of the first and second years of the Programme provide the students with exposure to industry innovations and practices. In the final year the students are allowed to choose to work on a research dissertation or a production-based major project.

Will I need to buy a camera and laptop?

A laptop would be required, a camera (any DSLR) is highly recommended to reap the full benefits of the programme.

What extracurricular activities can students participate in?

Media Studies Association, or MESTA is the department association for all co-curricular activities. The department also has a Press Club and Film Club. Apart from these, students are free to participate in other co-curricular and extra-curricular activities open to the rest of the programmes, such as theatre, music, sports, etc. There are various theatre clubs and bands on campus that remain active throughout the year.
