Overview on the Department

The Department of Performing Arts, established in 2010, initially started as a branch of the Department of Media Studies with one coordinator and two faculty members, and a mere strength of 20 students. In August 2012, it was declared as an independent department and since then, it has flourished and grown to the overall strength of 75 students, 3 permanent and 2 guest faculty members. Our very first batch graduated in the year 2013 and we aim to instil the same values in our future batches through our departmental vision and mission. Studies in Carnatic and Hindustani are taken in the PEP Programme, as are all Indian-based studies.

The Department of Music (Western) was established in 2016 with the notion that insights gained from the Western Classical Music traditions could be explored from Indian contexts well into the future. It began as the brainchild of the then Vice-Chancellor Fr Dr Thomas C Mathew, Dr Guydeok Yeon (Director of Centre for Innovation) and Prof. Bo Ra Lee (South Korea). Our first batch of 28 students graduated in 2019; and since then the department has grown to the overall strength of 107 students, with 3 full-time faculty, 3 adjunct faculty and 2 sessional faculty.

About the Department

Performing Arts

The Department of Performing Arts works on upholding a cultural ethos in the campus as well as outside via its numerous collaborations, works and productions. The Department has been in partnership with the esteemed Prithvi Theatre, Mumbai and has conducted numerous workshops in collaboration with them. Theatrical performances have been staged in collaboration with the Deanery of Sciences annually for Environmental Day. Venturing into the domain of music, World Music Day is organised and renowned artists are invited to showcase traditional music with university students. The pedagogy of the department moves one to a dimension of holistic development and this done through community outreach programmes which establish a connection with fine arts, international performances & research programmes and the intimative interactive theatre as a methodology which has become one of the best practices of the university among others. Programmes on professional ethics and developments have also been organised and a rigid research culture for the department has also been established. Dance, music and theatre productions by the performing arts troupe works towards the welfare of humanity through art and culture via plentiful national and international collaborations with reputed performing arts institutions.

Theatre Studies

Music

One of the most striking features of this department is the healthy atmosphere of support and solidarity among its members. As students, we do our best to encourage one another and cheer our fellow performers on in their endeavours. Meaningful friendships are formed across all three batches, and there is a comforting sense of camaraderie which somehow pervades even during these online semesters. Every event is a collaborative affair, with staff and students working in tandem to bring our ideas to life - resulting in unforgettable concerts, insightful conferences and lively workshops. The fact that our professors let us in on the planning processes means that we gain valuable hands-on experience in event coordination and group work - skills which are central to a career in performance.

When it comes to practical instruction - that is, our chosen major in vocals or piano -  there is great emphasis on one-on-one learning. Teaching in small groups over different time slots ensures that lessons are pretty much personalized to suit each student’s unique range and pace. These practical classes provide us with the skills and techniques we need to develop and thrive in our major.

Among the notable aspects of the teaching style here is the interlinking of various musical concepts. Pitch and rhythm training, transcription, ensemble performances, sight-reading and theoretical foundations are all dealt with across different lessons, but the various faculty members work together to help us see the underlying connections among them. Understanding these links helps us better apply the skills from our ever-growing toolkits in musical knowledge. Furthermore, the tasks we receive are designed to help us merge our learning across subjects - when we examine common emotional responses to musical stimuli, and analyse pieces as if they were literary texts, we end up combining our learnings from our Psychology and English classes with our music education.

On the whole, the programme is structured in a way that it prompts us to take control of our own learning, while still giving us the necessary tools to help us along the path to independence. Creativity, determination and mutual support are our pillars as we navigate college life together!
