Overview on the Department
As one of the oldest branches of engineering, Civil engineering involves designing and constructing public and private projects to improve physical infrastructure and the environment. By integrating scientific principles with engineering experience, this course facilitates the planning, design, and construction of railways, airports, dams, environmental pollution control systems, water purification and distribution systems, and urban transportation systems that enhance the quality of life. The curriculum:
Is designed to find solutions to the problems faced by society in a fast changing world.
Gives students the theoretical background and professional attitude to serve the public.
It typically leads to entry-level positions or to pursue post-graduation in technical specialties like environmental, geotechnical, structural, and traffic & transportation engineering.
Best practices of Department
FIELD PRACTICE: The students in their final year undergo a mandatory training in Field Practice where the students are exposed to practices followed at a building construction site. The students are given hands on experience in construction of foundation work, reinforcement detailing, masonry work and other practical skills.
RESEARCH BY UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS: The Department of Civil Engineering encourages the students of UG and involves them in research work conducted by the faculties. This not only gives the students a research experience, but also improves their research profile by making them write research papers and publish them in reputed journals. This is an advantage for students who apply for leading universities to pursue their master’s program and helps them in gaining scholarship.
FAST TRACK - INDUSTRY INTERNSHIP PROGRAM: In this program the eligible students of final semester are allowed to take up full time paid industry internship instead of project work. The selected students complete their academic commitment through a fast track programme which helps them to work full time as an intern. Many of our students are placed through this industry internship model.
INTERNATIONALIZATION OF CURRICULUM: The department of Civil Engineering adopted the AICTE model curriculum which is on par with any of the international universities. The credits have been rationalized and the syllabus adopts a multidisciplinary approach by incorporating open electives and global electives where students can choose courses offered by other engineering branches and deaneries such as humanities and social sciences.
STUDENT CREDIT EXCHANGE PROGRAM: The Department of Civil Engineering has tie ups with Universities such as St. Martin University, USA and University of Belarus where our students can go on a credit exchange program or even execute their final year project at the above mentioned universities.
CARBON FOOTPRINT AUDIT: The department is proud to announce that it conducts the audit on carbon footprints of the campus with the help of UG students which not only encourages them to take up small steps towards sustainability but also helps them in building their practical knowledge about the environment and sustainability.
RESEARCH ON SUSTAINABILITY: The department is highly active in conducting research on sustainable building materials. Two externally funded projects from the Ministry of Mines Govt. of India and Department of Science and Technology are currently being carried out in the department.
Strategic Plan of Department (2020-2025)
National Board of Accreditation: The Department of Civil Engineering applied for NBA accreditation in December 2019. The inspection and accreditation process is expected to complete at the earliest as the situation of COVID 19 pandemic gets back to normal.
Choice Based Credit System: The Department of Civil Engineering has adopted CBCS from the academic year 2020-2021. The department has offered a new program in B.Tech Civil (Construction Engineering Management) with specialization in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning. The department is also introducing B.Tech Civil - Honours programme in Intelligent Transport and Traffic Management Systems and Structural Mechanics from academic year 2021-2022.
Patent: The department envisaged to apply for at least one patentship which it successfully achieved in the academic year 2019-2020 titled “Safety System for Collision avoidance in rural roads and highways” by Dr. Nabil Hossiney.
Use of Commercial Softwares: The Department aims in introducing commercial software in as many theory courses as possible to enhance the learning experience for the students and give them hands-on training on learning the technical skills to enhance their chances of getting placed in industries and pursue higher education in leading universities.

Lateral Entry:
Candidates who have successfully completed 3 year diploma in Civil Engineering are eligible to apply for lateral entry into:
- BTech Civil Engineering, (CE)
- B.Tech in Civil (Construction Engineering in Management) with specialization in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
Candidates will be admitted to the second year of the programme only after appearing the Christ University selection process for engineering programmes.
M.Tech in STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING [KEN]
Programme Eligibility
A Pass in BE/BTech or M.Sc. in Civil with 55% aggregate.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) - CIVIL ENGINEERING [KEN]
Programme Eligibility
A pass with 55% marks in post graduation and equivalent in the relevant subject from any recognized university.
A research proposal (Maximum 1500 words) has to be submitted along with the application.

What is Civil Engineering?
Civil engineering is a branch that deals with the planning, design, construction and maintenance of the physically and naturally built environment.
How is Civil Engineering different from Architecture?
Architects are involved mostly in planning of builndings and other structures, where in Civil Engineers are the one who execute the structural design, manage the construction of the buildings, transportation systems, environmental projects, dams, canals etc.
Does career in civil engineering include only monitoring the construction activities at site?
No. Contrary to popular belief, lot of jobs in civil engineering are executed in the office namely:

What are the salary prospects in Civil Engineering? Is the salary offered for a civil engineer less compared to IT sector?
Even though in some cases the initial salary of a fresh civil engineering graduate may seem slightly less compared to IT sector, upon gaining around 2 years of experience, the salary hike in civil engineering is extremely high. Also it usually does not require any investment to start as a consulting civil engineer and become an entrepreneur. In many cases an Engineer with 10 plus years of good experience as a civil engineer would earn a much higher salary compared to IT sector.
Can we work for an IT company if we have a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering?
Yes. Many IT companies do recruit engineers irrespective of their specialization. A student with a bachelor degree in civil engineering is eligible for placements in IT companies. The recruiting team will look at the attitude of the student to learn new concepts in programming. The key is to have a good general aptitude and problem solving skills.
