Admission FAQs

What is Civil Engineering?

Civil engineering is a branch that deals with the planning, design, construction and maintenance of the physically and naturally built environment.

How is Civil Engineering different from Architecture?

Architects are involved mostly in planning of builndings and other structures, where in Civil Engineers are the one who execute the structural design, manage the construction of the buildings, transportation systems, environmental projects, dams, canals etc.

Does career in civil engineering include only monitoring the construction activities at site?

No. Contrary to popular belief, lot of jobs in civil engineering are executed in the office namely:

1. Structural design

2. Quantity estimation

3. Computer Aided Design and Drawing

4. Project planning and management

5. Environmental Impact Assessment

Do Women find it difficult to manage a career in Civil Engineering?

No. Women can have a very aspiring and successful career in Civil Engineering. Many openings include government jobs in public works department, quantity estimation, quality assurance and control, structural design, project management etc involve women in large numbers in the office.

What are the salary prospects in Civil Engineering? Is the salary offered for a civil engineer less compared to IT sector?

Even though in some cases the initial salary of a fresh civil engineering graduate may seem slightly less compared to IT sector, upon gaining around 2 years of experience, the salary hike in civil engineering is extremely high. Also it usually does not require any investment to start as a consulting civil engineer and become an entrepreneur. In many cases an Engineer with 10 plus years of good experience as a civil engineer would earn a much higher salary compared to IT sector.

Can we work for an IT company if we have a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering?

Yes. Many IT companies do recruit engineers irrespective of their specialization. A student with a bachelor degree in civil engineering is eligible for placements in IT companies. The recruiting team will look at the attitude of the student to learn new concepts in programming. The key is to have a good general aptitude and problem solving skills.

What are the programmes in which we can pursue higher studies (Masters) upon completion of Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering?

Core Civil Engineering offers a plethora of programmes to pursue higher studies (Masters) Some of them are:

1. Structural Engineering

2. Construction Project Management.

3. Geotechnical Engineering.

4. Highway and Transportation Engineering

5. Environmantal Engineering
