Overview on the Department
The Department of International Studies, Political Science and History is part of the School of Social Sciences, CHRIST (Deemed to be University).
The Department offers two undergraduate programmes in History Economics and Political Science (HEP) and Economics, Political Science, and Sociology (EPS). The Department also offers MA in International Studies and Ph.D. in International Studies, Political Science and History.
These programmes introduce students to the theory and practice of Political Science and International Relations. It provides a platform to understand and analyse issues of power, authority, and governance. Studying and discussing the key questions that confront academics and practitioners can help students become better citizens while enhancing their analytical and communication skills.
The experienced faculty of the department create several opportunities for the students to explore the wide array of issues that arise in politics today and help students hone their skills of enquiry and research.
About the Department
The Department of International Studies and History inculcates regular practices aimed at improving the intellect and the involvement of students. These practices offer non traditional methods of learning and facilitate the overall development of the students.
Journal Club:The Journal Club is a weekly activity aimed at developing multiple perspectives through the study and analysis of journal articles relevant to the field of study. The students are given a list of important articles which are to be reviewed and presented in class. This gives the students an opportunity to present their own views and also develop critical thinking.
Guest Lectures: The department also organizes guest lecture sessions by learned scholars on a regular basis. The issues discussed, range from state systems, state challenges, international threats and other related areas. The Department also invites scholars and diplomats from foreign nations to address the students to have an inclusive approach.
Orientations:Orientation sessions are conducted to deal with non-academic issues and facilitate the social and personal development of the students. Ice breaking sessions, group activities, leadership training are some of the areas covered by orientation sessions.
Current Affairs: One hour is reserved every week for discussions related to current affairs. This enables the students to stay in touch with present conditions in the international political arena and also analyze theories by linking it to actual scenarios. Current scenarios have a profound impact on the discipline itself and contribute to its dynamic nature.
UGC NET Coaching:National Eligibility Test which the aspirants commonly abbreviated as NET, is a national level exam meant for scrutinizing the expert of the knowledge for holding the position of Lecturers/Professors/ associates/ research fellows at Indian varsities and colleges. This exam determines the eligibility of Indian nationals for the Eligibility for Assistant Professor only or Junior Research Fellowship & Eligibility for Assistant Professor Both in Indian Universities and Colleges. CBSE will conduct NET in 84 subjects at 90 selected NET Examination Cities spread across the country. The UGC NET coaching classes began in June, 2016.
Placement Training:Placement training for the students of M.A. International Studies was organized by Centre for Academic and Professional Support (CAPS) and the School of Law placement committee. The students were trained in resume writing, do’s and don'ts at interview. SWOT analysis and leadership skills were intimated to the students to prepare them for the future.
Holistic Education: Holistic education sessions aim at providing moral educational and philosophical values to students. Socio-personal interaction and anger management are some issues covered by holistic education classes.

Candidates writing the +2 examinations in March-May 2021 may apply with their class X and XI marks.
Students pursuing International curriculum must note that eligibility is according to AIU stipulations:
Applicants pursuing IB curriculum must have 3 HL and 3 SL with 24 credits.

Candidates writing the +2 examinations in March-May 2020 may apply with their class X and XI marks.

Master of Arts International Studies [BCC]
Programme Eligibility
Candidates who have passed Undergraduate degree with a minimum aggregate of 50% and above, from any recognised University in India or abroad recognised by UGC / AIU, are eligible to apply.
Students appearing for their final degree examinations in March-May 2021 are also eligible to apply (Applicants who are in the last year of their studies should have secured 50% or above aggregate in all the Semesters / Years of Undergraduate Examinations conducted so far).
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in History[BCC]
Programme Eligibility
CHRIST follows University Grants Commission (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M.Phil./Ph.D Degrees) Regulations, 2016 and the subsequent Amendments.
The minimum eligibility of candidates intending to pursue a doctoral programme is a pass with a minimum of 55% in the postgraduate programme in the discipline/specialization. Students who have completed their post-graduation from an international university must submit an equivalency certificate from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU).
Every candidate has to take the PhD Entrance Examination and Interview to be held on June 15, 2019, or on June 22, 2019, or on any other date announced. However, as per the UGC (Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of M.Phil./Ph.D. Degrees) Regulations, 2016 (#5.1), those who qualify UGC- NET (including JRF)/UGC-CSIR NET (including JRF)/ SLET/GATE/ teacher fellowship holders or have passed M.Phil Programme shall be exempted from the PhD Entrance Examination. Those candidates take a Research Skill Assessment Test along with their Personal Interview.
Candidates who have qualified UGC-NET (including JRF)/UGC-CSIR NET (including JRF)/ SLET/GATE/ teacher fellowship holder (KSET, SET etc.) or have passed M.Phil Programme may apply for PhD any time of the year by sending their Research Proposal and CV to phd@christuniversity.in

What are the scope opportunities of this program?
Our UG program is similar to Liberal arts program, that equips the students with basic foundational knowledge that equips them to go into Academia, public service, Government jobs, media, non-government organizations and most competitive exams.
Will Undergraduate and Postgraduate students have internship opportunities?
We encourage and help students in UG to take up internships in the second and final year. But it is not compulsory. In PG the students will have to go for a 6 week internship after 1st year compulsorily.
Is there placement opportunity available for the students through the department?
Placement Cell of the university helps the students from the department to find jobs.
Does the department offer opportunities for exchange program/study abroad programs for UG and PG students?
Yes. We facilitate several Semester abroad and exchange programs for both UG and PG students to countries like France, Japan, Khasakhstan and so on.
Can I work while doing the Masters program?
No, the course is rigorous and academic. The student will have to spend time reading course material and will have assignments.
Is the course a triple major and if so is it a degree course or a diploma?
Yes, the course is a triple major course. The three subjects offered under this programme are English, Political Science and History. It is a degree course.
What is the benefit this course will give me in the long run?
This particular course will enhance your knowledge in not just one but 3 different subjects expanding your options for further studies in the future.
My interest lies in Political science, how will this course help me refine that, when I study it along with English and History?
All three subjects will be given equal importance throughout the three years of this programme. Every student has to write a dissertation paper in their final year. If one's interest lies in Political science, the student can focus their dissertation paper in that particular subject and refine their knowledge;
How will BA EPH degree help me prepare for a step into the world of academia?
Towards the 4th semester, EPH offers a subject names 'Research Methodolgy', this subject will help the students not just to write their dissertation papers in the final year but will also enhance their knowledge and encourage them to pursue the field of academia.

Yes, you can pursue MBA after this degree however your knowledge gained in the course would be different from what you will be learning inan MBA programme.

What will I be able to do after completing the course BA International Studies, History & Political Science?
The students will be able to choose a subject of their choice and study further on the same and will also be eligible to sit for placements provided by the campus.
If I want to be a civil servant, how will this course help me shape my Aptitude towards the same?
Subjects taught in this programme will enhance ones basic knowledge in topics that are covered in civil service examinations. This way it will help a student have their basics before fully devoting themselves to pursuing the field of civil service.Service specialization deals with Food and beverage service, wine studies etc and Accomodation specialization has Front office and Housekkeping
For jobs in NGOs or Civil Services, which one of the combinations will you suggest?
Both combinations will be helpful as all the papers will help develop a strong base for competitive exams.
How does your course help in the case of industry placement?
We provide skill development training for the students along with internship opportunities in the fields the students are interested in. Also, the course based on Political Science and Economics provides a strong foundation for the risk analysis industry to understand the dynamics and interaction between the two subjects.
What is the internship procedure post-pandemic?
Post-pandemic, most internships were transferred to online platform. Last year, the department was successfully able to arrange for 100% online internshipsfor the PG students despite the pandemic.
Why should one choose Christ for IR? Kinda confused between International studies and ir, is there any distinction between the two?
International Studies has a broader approach which includes area studies, history, international law, international economics, international political economy. On the other hand, the International Relations has a narrow approach and is limited to political relations and diplomatic relations including diplomatic history. In this sense the International Studies is more broader as compared to International Relations.
Is dissertation compulsory during the masters course?
Dissertation is not compulsory but research paper is and has to be completed beforethe 4th sem. International Studies is inter-disciplinary, it is more inclusive. We provide couses like international-politics, international- history and international- economics unlike International Relations which mainly concentrates on that particular discipline.
